Why am I going on this Coaching Journey and what's in it for you?

Updated: Feb 28, 2021

I've always been interested in what drives people to do what they do. Therefore I am going to share my WHY for this Coaching Journey with you.

Everything Is 'Figureoutable' and everyone is resourceful

Looking back at my life so far and how I've approached life most of the time, I would say I’ve always had a rather positive outlook on life and what's possible You could say I am a 'glass-half-full person' rather than a 'glass-half-empty person'. Somehow, deep down inside, I have always had this belief that somehow everything is going to work out. And when I came across Marie Forleo and her book Everything Is Figureoutable, I made this my personal mantra.

"Whether you want to leave a dead-end job, break an addiction, learn to dance, heal a relationship, grow a business, master your money, travel the globe, or solve world hunger, Everything Is Figureoutable will train your brain to think more creatively and positively - especially in the face of setbacks."

The statement above is very closely related to the number first of the Coaching Principles & Values: The Client is resourceful: The client has all the resources within them to overcome their challenges and to achieve their goals. They have come to a coach to gain clarity and define the best way to move forward and not to be ‘fixed’.

“You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop." - Rumi

I strongly believe in the fact that everything is figureoutable and that every one of us has all the resources to figure it out - no matter what that might mean for the individual person.

My Personality Type - The Consul or ESFJ-A

My Myers–Briggs personality type (The Consul or ESFJ-A) might also be one of the main reasons why I developed the desire to go for the Coaching Diploma with BeCoach Academy. Some of the Consul/ESFJ-characteristics linked to coaching are:

  • Consuls can see what everyone needs in order to feel motivated and improve in their own skills

  • Consuls collect the necessary facts to help others make a decision and enjoy setting up effective procedures.

  • Consul personalities seek harmony and care deeply about other people’s feelings

  • Consuls are good at establishing and maintaining warm and genuine interpersonal relationships with other people working in real and tangible ways to improve their quality of life

  • Consuls are able to identify positive qualities and ideas of each person’s viewpoints

If you want to know more about my personality type (including my weaknesses or areas of development ;) ) follow this link.

If you haven't done a personalty type indicator test, I can highly recommend doing so. It's fun, it doesn't take long and with 16Personalities it's for free. After I took it I muttered to myself, “wow, this is so accurate it’s a little creepy”. Even if you are not surprised by the results, it gives you great insight and awareness in how you perceive the world and make decisions.

My experience with mentoring and leading teams

I've had quite some experiences when I helped people to tap into their own resourcefulness and to figure things out. These experiences gave me so much joy and fulfillment and made me realize that I have a natural talent to help others to develop and grow their own potential.

  • The most fulfilling part of my career so far has been being able to put together and grow teams. And I truly love to deal with the human element at work.

  • At PN Munich I'm a mentor and support my mentees to navigate challenging situations at work or making a career move.

  • One mentee, I supported throughout the ups and downs of finding a new job and deciding on which offer to take, once apologized to me for taking up too much of my time. But for me, the conversations didn't feel like effort. The process of asking questions and seeing her gaining more clarity made me feel energized and happy, it didn't feel like effort.

That's my WHY

All of this combined made me decide to follow my passion and sign up for a coaching training program. I have a natural talent and passion but I want to learn proper techniques and tools to make an even greater impact. One thing that was very important for me is that the training program follows the standards of the International Coach Federation (ICF). Since coaching is not a regulated profession, technically a certification is not required to be a coach. That's something I personally don't agree with. Having a certification and being bound to the ethical guidelines of the ICF is a no-brainer to me. That's why I chose to do my coaching diploma with BeCoach Acadamy.

I want to earn the right to guide others in their development. Because as a coach you make an indelible mark on the work, careers, and lives of those you coach.

Where do we go from here?

The goal is clear, I want to become a coach. The destination is not so clear yet. And with destination I mean what kind of coach I want to become. As a coach, there are many niches you can choose for yourself (life coach, empowerment coach, career coach, leadership coach, executive coach, personal development coach...the list goes on). But in my eyes, the journey towards my goals matters more than the destination, at least for the time being.

What will definitely happen along the way:

  • I will get to know myself better

  • Enhance my leadership style

  • Strengthen my relationships by further developing my communication skills

"Coaching is not just a set of skills, it is not just a profession, or an instrument for better people management, it is a lifestyle, an attitude and a way of being." - BeCoach Academy

And if I want to, I will have the option to create a new career path as a professional coach, which is also very exciting

"Who you will be as a coach cannot be separated from who you are as a human being. That is what gives coaching such potency; it is also what makes it a demanding path to walk. Becoming a master coach is an internal affair." - Gregg Thompson

Developing “the coach within” is going to be my journey for the next couple of months - It may be uncomfortable at some times, exciting at others. All of this I want to share with you on this blog. Join me on my journey to becoming a coach!
